Tips on Using These Printable Paper Dolls
Although it’s fun for my daughter to play dress-up with traditional plushie and toy dolls, buying a whole wardrobe can get costly and making actual clothes is not my forte (I can’t really sew!) So instead, I thought it would be fun to play with paper dolls because we all have access to paper and coloring and cutting is a much easier activity that even my little girl can do by herself without supervision.
After downloading this free printable paper dolls pdf, you can print out the dolls and clothing designs to color up, decorate and cut out. Remember with digital printables, you can print at different sizes and as many copies as you want. The only thing to remember is to always print the dolls and coordinating clothing at the same percentage so they fit each other properly. However, you can print one set larger and one set smaller to create different doll sizes.
Create a Paper Doll Wardrobe
First, the easiest way to start is to print out multiple copies of the clothing to decorate and color. Your kids can create a whole wardrobe for each paper doll to play with. By varying the color and decoration, you can create a lot of variation using the same basic template. You can decorate with glitter glue, lace trimming or ribbons. You can also draw your own patterns and designs to create a custom patterned shirt or pants.
Alternatively, you can also use the doll as a template and create your own completely custom clothing with paper. Older kids who are comfortable with drawing might want to create their own designs of course! Encourage them to use the examples as a jumping off point, but let them expand and create their own clothing for the dolls.
You can draw over the dolls with a piece of white paper on top of a lighted window, so you can see thru. That way you can design a new piece of clothing for your paper dolls. This activity can really go on for days as your kids get excited about designing clothing for their paper dolls!
Create Final Art Pieces
Another playtime idea is to use the paper doll pieces to compose characters that you then glue together as a final art piece. It’s a fun way to create lots of variations of the paper dolls, which in turn can become greeting cards, art print gifts for relatives or simply artwork for decorating the fridge.
In general, when using digital printables I always remind my kids that they can always print another copy to play with. This means they can always try again, giving them the freedom to take risks and try different ways of coloring and decorating.
We can always make another copy and try again! It definitely puts a different perspective onto the creation process when I remind my kids of this and to not treat play items as too precious. The great thing about paper is that we can recycle it!
Storytelling with Paper Dolls
Finally, another playtime activity is to create a story using different doll characters created. My kids and I do this together as we decorate and mix and match clothing pieces to create doll characters. It’s a fun process to spend time together and make up silly stories. Once we have a story and all the characters created in paper doll form, my kids can perform out the story for other family members and role-play outside as well.
As I’ve mentioned before, because we are making paper dolls, it’s okay if they get very used, dirty and even destroyed. We can always make more! So my kids like to use paper dolls especially when they want their characters to jump in the mud or have adventures outside. It’s really fun to see how their creativity opens up when you give them this possibility, again, to not treat toys as so precious. Toys are made to be used and played with after all.
