DIY Salt Dough Tips
What Can I Make With Salt Dough?
The idea behind salt dough is that you create shapes and then bake it in the oven to harden it. Once hardened and cooled, you can paint it to give it some design and color.
Lots of people love using salt dough to make Christmas tree ornaments. For our particular project, we made Salt Dough Snakes and it made for a great summer activity.
What Paint Can I Use to Paint My Salt Dough Figurines?
Be sure to use acrylic paint for the best results. Apple Barrel is a very popular brand for acrylic paint, but you can use whichever you find at your local craft store.
Watercolors are nice too but won’t offer as much coverage as acrylic. Plus, acrylic paint dries pretty fast, so it’s great to use with the kiddos.
How Long Does It Take To Bake Salt Dough?
Most standard recipes call for baking the salt dough figurines at 200 degrees for two hours. However, if your little ones are as impatient as mine (or if you have time constraints for play dates, birthday parties, etc.) then you can bake it at 325 degrees F for one hour – this is exactly what we did!
Mix The Dry Ingredients First
When mixing up the dough, add the dry ingredients into the bowl first. Once mixed, add the water and you’ll see it slowly turn into salt dough.
