I pretty much always have white cardstock on-hand. As a DIYer with two littles, it’s just become a necessity in my craft drawer.
I live in Canada and yes, wintertime is very cold! We often find ourselves indoors, looking for indoor activities to do – and this Polar Bear Craft is totally one of our go-to’s.

Polar Bear Craft Tips
Work on the Back of Your Cutout
When we mean the “back,” we mean that once you are done cutting (and following along the lines of your traced hand), flip it over so that you don’t see any of the pen/pencil tracing on your final product.
Have Fun with the Pipe Cleaner Color
Nope, it doesn’t have to be red! We had red on-hand, but surely, you can use any color you like! I love using red because it really stands out against the white cardstock.
Adult Supervision Will Be Required
Since you are using scissors, be sure that an adult is around when it comes time to cutting out the hand tracings.
Trimming May Be Necessary
I find the proportions of the polar bear a little funny when it comes to larger hands. When kids’ hands are traced for this project, it results in a cute and small polar bear. However, adult hands have longer fingers, and I find to make the polar bear look as cute as possible, it’s necessary to trim down the fingers.
You Can Also Make a Grizzly Bear
This craft can also be completed with brown cardstock to make a grizzly bear! You would just need a couple more details like beige cardstock to complete its face and ears.
Get Creative!
Feel like dressing up your bear a little bit? We don’t blame you! The photos you see here are really just the “base” of this project, but you can dazzle up your bear to suit your personality! Add multiple pipe cleaners to give it a colorful look (and a very colorful scarf!), or you can even draw some patterns on it or sprinkle it with glitter. The sky’s the limit with the idea possibilities!
Polar Bear Craft
Ingredients
- 1 white cardstock 12×12
- Pen or pencil
- Scissors
- Tape or glue
- Permanent marker
- 2 red pipe cleaners
Instructions
- Trace your hand with a pen or pencil (normally, you can fit two adult hands on one 12×12 cardstock)
- Draw out two ovals on the cardstock, away from the hands (they will all be separate pieces). Be sure your oval is larger than your thumb.
- Cut out all the pieces you drew out on cardstock.
- Flip over your cardstock pieces so that you do not see any pen/pencil marks.
- Tape or glue the oval onto the thumb.
- Draw out details of your polar bear’s face on the oval (mouth, nose, eyes, ears).
- Add details on each finger (they will act as the polar bear’s paws)
- Wrap a pipe cleaner around the “neck” of the polar bear. This will act as its scarf.
