To most, May the 4th is just another day. To Star Wars fans, it’s a time to celebrate and geek out. (Has anyone seen where I put my lightsaber?) We present to you: the cutest Chewbacca cookies. Ever.
May The Fourth Cookies
I remember first hearing about “May the 4th” in my college days. I was a new employee at a bookstore and thought: “Oh. Em. Gee. That is brilliant! Why didn’t I think of that?”
It’s been a part of me ever since.
Joe and I have lots of things in common, and one of them is definitely our love for Star Wars. There are things he’ll never understand (my endless love for Harry Potter, the fact that I’m always Team Britney… there, I said it.), but the Jedi Force is definitely something we can both agree on.
Homemade Wookie Cookies
For this year’s May the 4th festivities, I bring to you: Chewbacca Cookies. I’m usually one for decorating sugar cookies, so I thought I’d try my hand at sugar chocolate cookies. They’re just as easy to make and taste incredible (double win for double chocolate – make sure you prepare our homemade chocolate buttercream).
These are incredibly simple to make, even if your kiddos aren’t used to using a piping back to decorate cupcakes or cookies.

Chewbacca Wookie Cookie Tips
All the exact steps are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. First, here are some extra tips that will help you as you make them.
Chill The Cookie Dough
This recipe includes how to make chocolate cookies from scratch. When you make the dough, chill it in the refrigerator for at least an hour before you bake them.
Chilling the dough makes it easier to roll them out.
Cool Cookies Before Decorating
Allow the cookies to come to room temperature before you add any of the decorations. If they are too warm, it will melt the icing.
Make Grey Fondant
To make grey fondant that will become Chewbacca’s belt, add black gel food coloring a little bit at a time to the white fondant.
Mix Buttercream Frosting
You don’t have to make the buttercream frosting from scratch. You can also use food coloring to dye store-bought vanilla icing to save yourself time.
Decorate Cookies WIth Chewbacca’s Fur
Use Wilton tip #233 to drizzle brown buttercream frosting on each cookie. Try to make it look like Chewbacca’s long fur.
Attach Fondant Belt
Finally, add the fondant utility belt on top of the cookies. They are ready to eat!
How To Decorate Chewbacca Wookie Cookies
Equipment
- Paint brush (for your silver food dust)
- Wilton icing tip #12
- Wilton Icing Tip #233
- Cookie cutter (circle, about 2 inches in diameter)
- Toothpick
Ingredients
Chocolate Cookies
- 1 1/2 cups Flour
- pinch Salt
- 1 tsp Baking Powder
- 3/4 cup Cocoa Powder
- 1 stick Butter softened
- 1 1/2 cups Sugar
- 1 Egg
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
Icing
- 1 stick Butter softened
- 2 cups Confectioner's Sugar
- 3 tbsp Milk
- 1 tbsp Cocoa Powder
Decorating
- 4 ounces White Fondant divided
- Black Gel Food Coloring
- Cornstarch for rolling
- Silver Food Dust
Instructions
- Prepare your cookies: in a medium-sized bowl, sift together flour, salt, baking powder, and cocoa powder. Set aside.
- Using a stand or electric mixer, mix butter, sugar, and egg on medium high. When it reaches a creamy consistency, add vanilla.
- Lower the mixing speed to medium and slowly start adding your dry ingredients, one third at a time.
- Once your cookie dough has formed, roll it into a ball and cover with plastic wrap. Chill in the refrigerator for at least one hour.
- Once your hour is up, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- On a lightly-floured surface, roll out your dough so that it’s about ¼ of an inch thick. Using your cookie cutter, cut out circle shapes and gently place on your lined baking sheet (about 1-2 inches apart from each other).
- Bake for 8 to 10 minutes and allow the cookies to cool completely before decorating.
- Prepare your fondant shapes: first, line a pan with wax paper. Take half of your white fondant and add 2 small drops of black food coloring and fold. Continue folding until the fondant turns grey.
- Lightly dust your working surface with cornstarch and roll out your grey fondant (about ¼ of an inch thick). Using the tip of your Wilton #12, cut out small circles and place on your wax paper-lined pan. Brush the silver food dust on each small fondant circle.
- Take the rest of your fondant, and add it to whatever’s left of your grey fondant. Add 3 drops of black food coloring and fold until black-grey in shade.
- Roll out on your working surface (you may add cornstarch if necessary) until about ¼ of an inch thick. Cut out long rectangular shapes and place on your wax paper.
- Prepare your buttercream icing: using a stand or electric mixer, mix butter, sugar, and milk on high. Once the buttercream starts to form, add cocoa powder. You’ll want your buttercream to form stiff peaks, so add your sugar and/or milk accordingly (only one tablespoon at a time, though!).
- Using your Wilton #233, frost each cookie with your chocolate buttercream. Then, add your rectangular strips diagonally across each cookie.
- With a toothpick, add some frosting to the back of each silver fondant circle and add them to each strip of Chewbacca’s sash. Eat, enjoy, and May the 4th be with you!
