Looking for your next best winter DIY? This DIY Fake Snow for Sensory Bins is the perfect cold-day activity. Encourage your kiddos to use their imaginations and get messy (but the fun kind of messy!).
Welcome back, crafty mamas! My name is Lisa Favre, the founder of the food and party blog, Sugar Agenda, where we believe that every day is worth celebrating!
When I was younger, I always loved playing in the snow. However, living in Montreal, Canada, winter days got INCREDIBLY cold, so playing outdoors wasn’t always realistic. Now that I’m a mom, I am so happy to have come up with a fun alternative: DIY Fake Snow for Sensory Bins.

DIY Fake Snow Tips
Equal Parts Ratio
It’s easy to make your very own DIY fake snow! Just keep in mind that the cornstarch and baking soda should always be a 1:1 ratio. For the water, you will want to add enough so that it gives it a “wet sand” texture, so that when you squeeze it, it will hold its shape.
Can I Substitute Any Ingredients?
When making your sensory bin snow, we recommend sticking with the ingredients as listed in the recipe card. This will ensure you get the best textured “fake snow” for sensory play!
Do I Have to Use a Bin?
Not necessarily! Bins are great for sensory activities because they give tons of room to play, but like in our images, you can also use deep baking pans, large mixing bowls, etc.
What Can I Put in my Snow Sensory Bin?
The sky’s the limit as to what you can put in your DIY snow sensory bin. Here are a few ideas:
- Miniature toy cars
- Miniature plastic Christmas tree ornaments
- Action figures and dolls
- Small toy/plastic shovels
…and so much more!
It’s a Little Bit Messy
…but that’s the fun part about this sensory bin! From making the DIY fake snow to actually playing with it, don’t expect this activity to be neat and tidy. Don’t worry: this activity will keep your kiddos occupied for hours and totally worth the (fun kind of) mess!
