Tips on Using These Printable Animal Coloring Pages
The great thing about digital printables is their versatility and ease of use. You can download and store the files on your computer very easily. Then, you can access them whenever you need, printing with your home printer. It’s a super easy process and very helpful when it comes to crafting. Let’s go over some of my go-to ideas for using digital coloring pages.
Color with non-traditional materials
The first and most obvious option is to use these free printable animal coloring pages as exactly that – coloring pages! Your little ones will definitely love the cute illustrations and you can let them experiment with crayons, colored pencils, markers and paints.
One way to spice up the very common activity of coloring, is to use non-traditional materials. Maybe one day your kids want to try painting with foods or juices that can stain the paper? Maybe another day they want to glue on pasta pieces to compose their image? Or perhaps one day, you’ll have colored tissue paper lying around and let them ball up little pieces to compose the coloring page image in a pointillism style?
There are many options possible when it comes to “coloring” the images. You just have to get creative with whatever materials you might already have at home. This is also a great exercise in creativity with your kids, to see what they can come up with, instead of using traditional crayons or pencils. Try it out!
Use it as a template
Coloring pages are actually a great resource for creating templates and this branches out to many other types of crafting at home. Whether you want to use the line drawings as a guide or trace directly to paint, make cards, create stencils and more!
With the variety of digital coloring pages available online, you can pretty much find any image you need. Then you can use the black and white line image for a variety of projects, whatever occasion or season it might be.
Also, don’t hesitate to print the digital images smaller or larger, as you see fit. Then you can decorate them and cut them out as embellishments for card-making or as decorations in journals or other artwork. I’m a huge fan of printing images smaller, coloring them up and using as gift tags as well!
Think of digital coloring pages as a library of free clip art! What will your next project be?
Storytelling and Writing
Finally, for these particular printable animal coloring pages, I have actually included a title or phrase as part of the printed page. This is to help spark ideas if you want to take the coloring page activity one step further.
I’m always a fan of prompting my kids to think about something and then let their imaginations go wild. In this case, they might spend a few minutes coloring the pages, but all the while thinking about the phrase written and what kind of story could come out of the image. They can check the expression of the animals, the interaction… what might be happening if this is actually a page out of a storybook?
So after coloring a page, you can actually guide this activity into a storytelling and writing session. Grab some paper and let your kids write the matching story to the image. This is an especially great option for older kids who are not satisfied with just coloring.
