Tips on Using Educational Worksheets
Whether you are printing out these free printable worksheets for 1st graders or the many other educational worksheets we have posted, here are few tips to help you out.
Printing at Home
When printing digital printables at home, remember to always check your print preview, so that there are no surprises after clicking print. You always want to check the paper size and other print settings to get the best print-out. I suggest printing on regular copy paper in draft mode if your printer has that setting available. That option saves ink and usually your kids will have no problems seeing the designs and tracing over the lines anyway.
As with all digital printables, remember you can always print out as many copies as your need! So don’t hesitate to revisit worksheets over and over again throughout the year.
Making it a Game or Challenge
So now that you have the free printable worksheets for 1st graders PDF downloaded and printed, how can you get your kids interested? I’ve always been a big fan of making everything a game or challenge. It’s a little mind trick that transforms any chore into a much more interesting activity.
If your kid is motivated by challenges and rewards, you can set some goals with little rewards for finishing the worksheets. If you kid enjoys gameplay, be sure to present the worksheets as a fun activity that you can fill out together for some fun times together. Oftentimes, it makes a difference how you present the activity to your kid – because it’s not boring homework, but rather a cool worksheet we can fill out and then paint over perhaps!
Spending Quality Time Together
This leads me to the topic of reminding all us parents to spend even just 15 minutes of uninterrupted and full attention time with your kid using one of these worksheets. It might not seem like much, but the act of completing a worksheet together really makes a difference. You will notice that there are a variety of worksheet topics and there are versions that can be filled in together or with free writing spaces.
Even when your kids are at school, their teachers are giving them full attention while educating them, so we should do no less at home. Try to make the time to work through some worksheets together, rather than always using these as a distraction tool because you need to do something else. There is a time and place for both situations of course!
I hope it helps to share this thought, because it’s a reminder I need to tell myself as well. I often using printables to keep my kids busy, so that I have time to complete chores. But that shouldn’t be the only option. Even the simple action of rolling a die and completing some addition problems together can be fun and engaging for your kid. So try it out together!
